Aegis Juris fraternity leader Arvin Balag was released from Senate custody on Thursday night following a directive from the Supreme Court.

Senate sergeant at arms Jose Balajadia said Balag was handed over to his legal counsel past 7 p.m. after undergoing a medical check-up.

Balag, who was implicated in the hazing death of Horacio "Atio" Castillo III, has been detained inside the Senate since Oct. 18.

He was cited in contempt during the Senate hearing last October for refusing to answer questions and repeatedly invoking his right against self-incrimination.

Balag then filed a petition of certiorari and application for a temporary restraining order that questioned his detention inside the upper house. - report from Zandro Ochona, ABS-CBN News
