MANILA - The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) remains an independent agency and is "not serving politics" following criticism from President Rodrigo Duterte, a central bank official said Thursday.
"One thing we know. We are not serving politics. The BSP remains independent and an independent agency," Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo said.
Guinigundo declined to comment on how Duterte's latest tirade will affect the central bank's relationship with the administration.
In his speech after signing the 2017 national budget, Duterte criticized anew the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) for not cooperating in his government’s fight against money laundering.
Duterte also lashed out at the BSP and AMLC for sitting on bank records needed to support charges related to the Bilibid drug trade.
“You are contributing to the corruption of this country,” Duterte said.
“You have reported to the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) and submitted it very late yet you don’t have the assessment report. Kaya kayo nilagay diyan kasi may trabaho kayo. If you cannot do your job, get out from that office," he added.
