MANILA - The government's anti-narcotics drive will continue through the Christmas season, where a "heyday" in the sale of narcotics is possible, the head of the Philippine National Police said Thursday.
Director General Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa based his assessment on statements from detained drug suspect Kerwin Espinosa, who said the illegal trade would usually pick up during the holidays.
"Buhos ang pera, maganda ang negosyo nila sa drugs kapag Christmas season. Iyung demand and supply is very high during that period dahil maraming pera at maraming gustong sumaya sa mga drug user," Dela Rosa told ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda.
(Money flows, business is good when it's Christmas. The demand and supply are very high during that period because drug users have money and they want to be happy.)
Combat operations against communists rebels meanwhile will be suspended this holiday season under President Rodrigo Duterte's declaration of a unilateral ceasefire, Dela Rosa mentioned.
Police have not monitored any security threat against the Christmas celebration, he added.
