MANILA - A garbage collector was fired Wednesday for catcalling a female student in Barangay Bagumbuhay in Project 4, Quezon City in violation of a local ordinance, the city's Public Affairs Department said.

The student was waiting for a ride on the corner of Kalantiyaw Street when the garbage collector made comments about her that made her uncomfortable.

"Dumaan ang isang dilaw na garbage truck na may body number 15. Kasunod nito ang lalaki na collector. Pagdaan sa akin, sinabi niya: 'idol, ang ganda mo. I love you,'" the student told the city government in a message sent via social media.

"Nilingon ko siya at sinabing, 'bastos!' Ngunit ngumiti pa siya. Nakakabastos po. Sana matukoy ang taong ito at mapagsabihan man lang," she added.

The QC Public Affairs Department advised the student to file a complaint before the Barangay Bagumbuhay Violence Against Women and Children Desk and forwarded her message to the city's Garbage Collection Section.

After an investigation with OMNI Hauling Services Inc., authorities were able to identify the garbage collector. He was then fired by the company for violating the city's anti-catcalling ordinance.

Under the ordinance, cursing, stalking, humiliating or taunting a woman are punishable with a fine of P1,000 to P5,000 and/or up to a month in jail. Those who commit severe violations such us unnecessary touching may end up staying in jail for a year.
