Video footage caught by closed circuit television (CCTV) camera showed irregularities during a police raid in December that led to the arrest of the sons of a couple accused of being the leaders of an illegal drugs syndicate, their family’s lawyer said Tuesday.
Lawyer Marvin Lumbo, who was also arrested during the raid on the Odicta family’s house by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and Philippine National Police (PNP) for obstruction of justice, said that some operatives’ suspicious actions were caught on video.
The video showed K-9 units, with dogs trained to sniff out illegal substances, outside the compound, which Lumbo questioned, as operatives had already started going through the house.
One agent was also shown leaving the house with a full backpack, which the lawyer said was suspicious as his clients had reported some of their belongings had gone missing.
While Lumbo declined to be interviewed by media, he criticized the alleged irregularities in the December 8 raid on his clients’ home, as well as his own arrest, which was decried by the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL).
According to former Bayan Muna representative and NUPL chair Neri Colmenares, lawyers should not be “mixed up” with their clients.
“Ang lawyer should not be mixed up with their client, otherwise wala na silang abogado na magde-defend sa akusado,” he said.
The PNP said it respects the Odicta family’s rights to question the operation. If there is any basis for doubt, it will be best to bring the case to court, said police Superintendent Gilbert Gorero.
PDEA officers declined to comment on the video, as their top officials have yet to return from vacation. –with reports by Nony Basco, ABS-CBN News
