MANILA - (UPDATED) Motorists will risk higher fines starting January should they illegally park their vehicles, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said Wednesday.
The fine for attended illegal parking was raised to P1,000 from P200 while that of unattended illegal parking was pushed up to P2,000 from P500, said MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago.
Violators may be issued traffic violation tickets up to twice a day, with a 3-hour interval between issuances.
The MMDA can also issue a new ticket to an erring motorist every 3 hours if he fails to remove an illegally parked vehicle after being notified of the violation, said Pialago.
Pialago earlier said the new fines will be implemented starting Wednesday.
The MMDA, however, received feedback that many motorists were not aware of the steeper penalties and decided to postpone its implementation to January 7, she said.
The agency will also iron out procedures on how motorists can settle the fines, Pialago said.
