MANILA- President Rodrigo Duterte plans to take his motorcycle for a spin around the Philippine capital despite objections from his security team, Presidential Security Group chief Brig. Gen. Jose Niembra revealed Wednesday.
"He (Duterte) has plans to go around Metro Manila on a motorcycle," Niembra told reporters.
While possible, Niembra said the PSG would advise Duterte to ride his motorcycle in a "secured, controlled area."
"Ito ang passion niya kasi. Ito ang hilig niya. Ang sabi nga niya, he will live and die with a motorcycle kasi sabi niya mas mabuti pang [ma]matay siyang nakamotor kaysa mamatay siyang nakahiga. Ganoon kapursigido po ang ating Presidente," the PSG chief said.
(This is his passion. He says that it's better to live and die riding a motorcycle than to die on a bed. That's how passionate our President is.)
Niembra clarified that after the motorcycle mishap, Duterte now only takes motorcycle rides inside the Malacañang complex.
The 74-year-old Duterte had rejected suggestions for him to stop riding following a motorcycle mishap in October, insisting that it served as his therapy.
"The rule sa motor is pag sumemplang ka, kailangan sumasakay ka ulit (you need to ride again)" to avoid being overcome with fear, Duterte told ABS-CBN News in October.
