MANILA - Vice President Leni Robredo on Monday advised young leaders to stay focused on their task despite criticisms, citing her own experience with bashers and critics.

Robredo said she is too busy to be affected by them.

Wala akong panahon para patulan ‘yung mga walang kwentang nangyayari sa paligid,” Robredo told Sangguniang Kabataan leaders during the closing ceremony of the Angat Buhay Youth SK Summit in Quezon City.

“Hanapin natin ‘yung saysay natin. Kasi ‘yung saysay natin is so much more than the negativity around us. ‘Yung value natin is so much more than lahat who are trying to put us down,” she added.

Robredo urged young leaders to stick to their ideals and reject the negative practices in traditional politics. Among these, the practice of some politicians publicizing their name through government projects.

“‘Yung ethical leadership ay napakalungkot na struggle kasi magko-contend ka with a system na may nakasanayan,” she said.

“Mas madali magpalamon sa sistema… Mas mahirap to chart your own course, pero ‘yun ang challenge for all of us here,” Robredo added.

Robredo also advised SK leaders to implement projects based on data and studies.

“Hindi bara-bara. Lahat evidence-based. Lahat organisado. Kasi kung ang ginagawa natin ‘yung naiisip lang natin na hindi naka-base sa datos, nagsasayang lang tayo ng resources,” she said.

The 4-day summit seeks to foster progressive and transparent governance among newly elected SK leaders. It also aims to promote participatory mechanisms and active citizenship among the barangay youth. The summit tackled good practices and innovative projects in an effort to inspire similar initiatives in other local youth communities. Thirty-nine selected SK officials from different parts of the country participated in the summit held in Talisay, Batangas.
