MANILA- President Rodrigo Duterte has certified as urgent a bill pushing for salary increases for government workers.
Duterte, in a Dec. 13 letter to Senate President Vicente Sotto III, called for the speedy passage of Senate Bill 1219 which seeks to increase the wages of civilian government employees.
The President in his letter said the salary hike is necessary to "address the need to further invigorate public service with efficiency and productivity by providing all government civilian personnel a just and equitable compensation responsive to their economic needs."
When a bill is certified as urgent, there is no need to wait for the 3-day period between the second and third readings before it gets passed.
The proposed measure seeks to increase salaries of government employees in 4 tranches starting January next year.
If the bill is signed into law, salaries of government employees can increase by at least 20 percent by 2023.
