MANILA - Aftershocks continued to rock the town of Padada, Davao del Sur, on Sunday complicating efforts to rescue several people believed to be trapped in a collapsed building.

Four people reportedly got trapped after the Southern Trade Commercial Store in Padada collapsed due to the magnitude 6.9 quake which struck the area Sunday afternoon, local disaster officials said.

At around 8 p.m. rescuers lead by Bureau of Fire Protection conducted a surface search but got no response from possible survivors inside the building.

Several strong aftershocks were felt as search and rescue teams were surveying the area.

The state seismology bureau said a magnitude 4.5 quake struck Padada at 8:38 p.m. and another magnitude 4.0 shook the town at 9.07 p.m.

According to Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the structure was built sometime in 1990s, and it already showed cracks after the series of quakes that hit Mindanao last October.

Rescuers are still assessing the situation to see how they can reach the people believed to be trapped under the rubble.
