Japan-bound plane veers off NAIA runway during takeoff

MANILA (UPDATED) —A Japan-bound passenger plane veered off the runway while departing from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) early Saturday.

The plane landed onto the grass-covered ground while it was about to take off, a passenger told ABS-CBN News.

Initial report from the Manila tower stated that Jetstar's airbus 320 experienced runway excursion upon making a 180-degree turn for departure while taxiing and got stuck at the grassy portion.

All passengers were safe.

Investigators from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Aircraft Accident Investigation Inquiry Board were dispatched to determine the cause of the incident.

The incident has affected two flights, as of posting.

Cebu Pacific's 5J580 Cebu to Manila flight was diverted to Clark International Airport while Air Asia flight Z2 889 from Seoul, South Korea landed on runway 06/24.
