'Urduja' intensifies into tropical storm, threatens Samar

MANILA- The weather disturbance named "Urduja" has intensified into a tropical storm and is expected to make landfall over Eastern Samar on Friday, state weather bureau PAGASA said Thursday.

PAGASA, in its 2 p.m. weather bulletin, warned of moderate to heavy rains within the 400 km diameter of the tropical storm. 

The following tropical cyclone warning signals have been raised in the following areas:


-Eastern Samar


-Camarines Sur
-Northern Samar
-Southern Leyte
-Northern Cebu including Bantayan Island
-Northern Iloilo

Scattered to widespread rains meanwhile is expected over Visayas and the regions of Bicol, Caraga, and Northern Mindanao within 24 hours, PAGASA said.

The center of Urduja was last spotted at 1 p.m. at 90 km East Southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. 

The tropical storm packs maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. It is forecast to move westward at 7 kph.

Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are also advised by PAGASA not to venture out over the eastern seaboard of Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas due to moderate to rough seas linked to the weather disturbance.
