Kusug Tausug Party-list Rep. Shernee Abubakar Tan on Tuesday urged Congress anew to expand martial law nationwide to quell the alleged recruitment activities of communist rebels.
Tan made the call in a joint session that tackled President Rodrigo Duterte's request to extend the military rule in Mindanao until December 31, 2018 amid security threats from the Islamic State-linked terrorists and the communist New People's Army (NPA).
"There are also NPAs in Luzon and Visayas, therefore, if martial law is good for Mindanao, isn't it that martial law is also good for Luzon and Visayas?" Tan said.
She made the same suggestion when Congress voted on the first extension of the martial rule in July.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana however said 45 percent of NPA rebels are in Mindanao.
"In Visayas and Luzon, manageable po ang activities ng CPP-NPA d'yan kaya I don't think that will be used to spread or include Visayas and Luzon in martial law," he said.
