MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday admitted that a governor from Mindanao whom he once fell in love with, was one of his supporters during the campaign.
In a speech in Malacañang, Duterte said only two governors supported him during the election, one is Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos and another one from Mindanao.
“Itong si Imee dahil magkaibigan kami, she chose to support me,” Duterte said.
“Iyung isa nasa Mindanao, because of love. Love talaga yun. I tell you baka sabihin niya ano, it reaches her ears, love talaga, love at first sight. Pero gaga yun, nanununtok yun. Tinamaan ako sa tiyan dito sa, natumba ako.”
During his meeting with the Filipino community in Malaysia last November 9, Duterte also mentioned the Mindanao governor.
He said the Mindanao governor supported him because of their past relationship.
“Sa Mindanao, well, of course, landslide ako pero wala akong, ang governor kaisa-isa lang at dahil siya ay naging kasintahan ko,” he said.
“Matanda na siya ngayon but she was, she became mayor when she was only 27. Ako naman noon 42 lang ako. Batang-bata pa kami. Kagabi, nandoon siya sa Malacanang. Hinila ko sa isang kanto, sabi ko sa bodyguards, ‘oist, umalis kayo diyan, halikan ko lang itong..’ pero hanggang diyan na lang kasi may asawa eh baka mapatay tayo. Nagyon meron na, noon wala.”
Before the May 2016 elections, then Mayor Rodrigo Duterte was quoted as having said that he would run for president only if he can have Agusan del Norte Gov. Angelica Amante-Matba as his First Lady.
A Davao blogger once described Amante-Matba as a "long-time friend" of Duterte.
Another political website has described Amante-Matba as "the governor who stole Duterte’s heart."
She got a one-on-one meeting with Duterte in Malacanang last October 3.
They also met in Agusan del Norte last September, according to her public Facebook page.
