MANILA—Poly Jorge Magtubo and his fiancée, Christine Manansala, are supposed to be happily counting the days to their wedding day, but their plans have changed drastically.

Magtubo and Manansala were set to tie the knot on Sunday, December 16, after eight years being together.

Instead of waiting with excitement, though, as the big day drew near, Magtubo is at a hospital longing to see Manansala's health make progress.

Manansala is being treated for severe injuries to the head and a fractured arm she sustained during a road accident that occurred in Batangas on December 3, an incident that killed 3 people.

"Postpone muna. Pati simbahan nasabihan ko na, sa mga event coordination namin nasabihan ko na," Magtubo said.

"Since Monday [December 3], three days siyang hindi gising. Nu'ng last Thursday, nag-umpisa siyang magmulat pero halfway lang then Friday totally namulat mata niya kaso until now hindi pa rin siya nakaka-recognize ng mga command. Tulala lang siya."

Manansala was one of the passengers of a private transport service vehicle that turned turtle at STAR Tollway near Lipa City. Two students and the van's driver died in the accident. Manansala remained in intensive care at the time of this interview.

"Papunta siya ng school. Papasok siya ng school," said Magtubo.

"Bukas mag-undergo siya ng operation, lalagyan siya ng tracheal tube."

Magtubo has used up the money they saved up for their wedding to help cover the mounting hospital bills and medicines.

He said he is thankful to the donations from friends, coworkers and students of Manansala.

Manansala is an MS Microbiology graduate of the University of the Philippines in Los Baños and a BS Biology graduate of De La Salle Lipa. She is a member of the De La Salle Lipa College of Biology Department and Senior High School Department.

"Pinagli-leave ko na siya sabi niya last week na kasi exam week," he said.

The road to recovery may take some time but Magtubo said he believes that his fiancée is slowly, but surely, getting there.

"Mula noong Friday ang objective namin maka-fully recover siya. Kapag may bumibista na kakilala o kaya ako, 'yung heart rate niya tumataas. So naniniwala kami na naririnig niya kami," he said.

While the exchange of "I dos" may have to wait, Magtubo assures his fiancée that he will be right where he is supposed to be: beside her.

"Sabi ko nandito lang ako," he said. "Kung di mo ako nakikita, nand'yan lang ako sa tabi mo. Hindi ako mawawala."
