MANILA -- Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to probe the alleged pay-offs in the Bureau of Immigration (BI) following the arrest of more than 1,000 Chinese workers in Clark, Pampanga.
"I have tasked the NBI to probe for the truth behind these allegations," Aguirre said in a statement Sunday.
Last week, Aguirre said he suspects that BI officials were bribed after almost 70 Chinese nationals escaped government custody.
"President Duterte's marching orders to us is very clear, Absolutely no corruption! This mandate will be relentlessly pursued!" he added.
Aguirre earlier claimed that Chinese gambling tycoon Jack Lam, who owns Fontana Leisure Parks and Casino in Pampanga which was shut down for allowing online gaming operations sans necessary permits, and for employing illegal workers from China, tried to bribe him.
