MANILA -- Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Monday posted bail on a libel charge filed by President Rodrigo Duterte's eldest son, evading arrest.

Trillanes in 2017 accused former Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte and the President's son-in-law, Manases Carpio, of involvement in a scheme to extort money from ride-hailing firms.

He paid a total P96,000, P24,000 for each of the 4 counts of libel.

The Pasay court subsequently lifted the warrants of arrest against the lawmaker and issued certificate of voluntary surrender.

The libel case is the latest legal trouble for Trillanes, who had long accused the President and his family of corruption.

In September, the President withdrew Trillanes' amnesty over 2 failed military uprisings he led in 2003 and 2007 and ordered the resumption of civilian and military court proceedings.

Trillanes is out on bail on a rebellion charge that stemmed from the takeover of the Manila Peninsula Hotel in 2007. Another court that heard a coup d'etat case over an earlier hotel siege in 2003 refused to order his arrest.
