MANILA - Six Court of Appeals justices and a member of the academe have been shortlisted by the Judicial and Bar Council to fill the upcoming vacancy in the Supreme Court.
The list will be submitted to President Rodrigo Duterte, who will fill the post to be vacated in December by Associate Justices Arturo Brion. A separate list was earlier drawn up to replace Associate Justice Jose Perez, who will also retire this month.
The shortlist released Friday was for Brion, who will retire on Dec. 29. Court of Appeals Associate Justice Rosmari Carandang topped the list with six votes.
Tied for second place are CA Associate Justices Apolinario Bruselas Jr., Jose Reyes Jr., and Japar Dimaampao, with five votes each.
CA Justices Amy Lazaro-Javier and Noel Tijam, and Centro Escolar University law school vice dean Rita Linda Ventura-Jimeno each got four votes.
Bruselas, Reyes and Dimaampao were also shortlisted by the JBC to replace Perez, who will retire on Dec. 14
Brion and Perez will retire upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 for the judiciary.
The JBC, headed by Supreme Court Chief Justice, screen applicants for positions in the judiciary and offices of the Ombudsman.
Duterte has ninety days, from the time of vacancy, to appoint his first two appointees to the high court.
