KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato - Suspected communist rebels set fire to quarry equipment worth 4 million pesos in Barangay Concepcion, Tuesday evening.

Investigation showed around 20 armed men who introduced themselves as New People Army members infiltrated the Happy Living quarry site around 7 p.m., Tuesday and set fire to the equipment. A quarry company's dumptruck and two payloaders were "totally damaged", while two dumptrucks and another payloader were partially damaged in the fire.

Aside from burning heavy equipment, the armed group also took two shotguns, an .38 revolver, two mobile phones, and a computer monitor from the security guards and offices of Happy Living.

The armed men said Happy Living was attacked after its owners failed to pay revolutionary taxes, security guards told investigators.

The bandits fled towards the direction of nearby Barangay New Pangasinan, witnesses said.

Last month, two heavy equipment, and four buses were also torched in Soccsksargen and Davao del Sur by armed men who identified themselves as members of the NPA.
