Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Wednesday accused President Rodrigo Duterte of masterminding the killing of Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr., who was shot dead by authorities inside his jail cell in Leyte.
Trillanes made the accusation after Duterte said that he will not allow the cops involved in Espinosa's death to go to jail despite a National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) investigation declaring the encounter as a rubout.
"Yung statement niya na yan ang nagpapatunay na siya ang mastermind sa pagpatay ni Mayor Espinosa," the senator told reporters on Wednesday.
(That statement proves that he is the mastermind behind the killing of Espinosa.)
Espinosa and fellow inmate Yap were killed inside the Baybay sub-provincial jail in Leyte last Nov. 5 after the mayor allegedly shot at operatives of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) who were serving a search warrant.
But the NBI said the warrant was "maliciously obtained" and that the case reeked of an "implied conspiracy."
Trillanes agreed and pointed at Duterte as the source of the plan, noting he had even reinstated police CIDG Region 8 head Supt. Marvin Marcos, who headed the operation.
"Maganda yan, maganda yang statement na yan because that's going to be used as evidence against him," he said.
(That's good. That statement is going to be used as evidence against him.)
