MANILA—Members of the House of Representatives will give away a chunk of their salaries to raise P10 million cash reward for Filipino gold medalists in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
The lower chamber adopted House Resolution 568 on Wednesday granting gold-medal winning athletes additional incentives, which will be pooled from the lawmakers' salaries from January 2020.
"The leaders and Members of the House of Representatives in the 18th Congress stand in solidarity with the Team Philippines throughout the competition in their quest to capture the gold medals in their respective sports, and to bring honor and pride to the Filipino people," part of the resolution read.
The cash reward will be given on top of the incentives provided by the government under the law.
Section 8 of Republic Act 10699 or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act states that SEA Games gold medalists are entitled to P300,000.
The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) will also give additional incentives to Filipino gold medal winners.
A total of 1,094 Filipino athletes are competing in this year's Games.
As of 10 p.m. of Dec. 4, the Philippines leads the medal tally, scooping up 56 gold medals, 41 silver medals and 22 bronze medals.—Report from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
