MANILA—Filipino medalists in these Southeast Asian Games should be awarded scholarships and education allowances, a lawmaker said Wednesday.
Such rewards should be given to winning athletes to honor their efforts boosting national pride, Quezon City Rep. Precious Hipolito-Castelo said.
"Free education is a fitting reward to our athletes who have demonstrated dedication, discipline and perseverance to bring honor to our country," Hipolito-Castelo said.
The government should recognize that most athletes representing the country in international competitions need financial help, she added.
"By giving them and their immediate families scholarships and allowances, we recognize their valuable contribution to the country and encourage other Filipino athletes to do the same," she said.
As of 6:20 p.m., the Philippines is still on top of the SEA Games medal tally with 54 gold, 37 silver and 19 bronze medals.
