MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte has named Lt. Gen. Gilbert Gapay as the new commanding general of the Philippine Army, according to an appointment paper signed Monday.
Gapay, chief of the military's Southern Luzon Command, will replace Lt. Gen. Macairog Alberto who is set to retire on Friday.
Prior to his appointment as Army chief, Gapay led the military's Mechanized Infantry Division and also served as commander of Joint Task Force Harribon in Davao region and as deputy commander of Armed Forces' Eastern Mindanao Command.
Gapay graduated at the top of the 1986 "Sinagtala" Class of the Philippine Military Academy.
