MANILA—Manila Mayor Isko Moreno early Tuesday ordered preemptive evacuation of residents living along the capital's coastal villages due to the threat of typhoon Tisoy.

"Kasi po mas ninanais namin na mailigtas kayo sa anumang posibleng kapahamakan nitong darating na bagyo," he said.

Those living in Baseco, Islang Puting Bato, Aroma and Happy Land, among others, will be housed in evacuation centers as Tisoy may bring possible storm surges.

The typhoon has made landfall over Gubat, Sorsogon at 11 p.m. Monday, state weather bureau PAGASA said. It is expected to unleash strong winds and heavy rains as it pass through Metro Manila.

"Ayon sa PAGASA, baka lumakas ang bagyo pagtungo sa Maynila," Moreno said.

The typhoon is currently packing maximum sustained winds of up to 175 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 240 kph.
