Typhoon Tisoy on Tuesday continued plodding closer to areas south of the capital, forcing authorities to suspend sea travel in some areas as thousands of residents fled to safer ground.

In Batangas province, some 200 travelers and 90 trucks were stranded at the port after authorities barred Ro-Ro (oll-on/roll-off) vessels and fastcraft from venturing off the sea due to rough waves.

Strong winds and rains also cracked the signage of a convenience store and swayed trees in Lipa town.

Authorities in neighboring Occidental Mindoro, meanwhile, brought some 1,900 people to evacuation centers.

Both Batangas and Occidental Mindoro earlier suspended Tuesday classes in all levels to prepare for the storm.

Tisoy on Monday night made landfall in Sorsogon, the southernmost province of Luzon island.

Frequent to continuous heavy to intense rains will lash Bicol Region, Romblon, Marinduque, Mindoro provinces, Calabarzon, Metro Manila, Bataan, Pampanga and Bulacan until late Tuesday afternoon, said the state weather bureau.
