'Be alert' as Tisoy bears down on Luzon; Signal no. 3 up in several areas

MANILA — The state weather bureau urged the public to "be alert" as typhoon Tisoy howled closer to Bicol region on Monday, threatening to bring heavy rains over parts of Luzon and Visayas, including venues of the Southeast Asian Games. 

Tisoy was 235 kilometers east southeast of Virac, Catanduanes at 10 a.m., packing maximum sustained winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour and 185 kph gusts, said PAGASA. 

The country's 20th storm this year is expected to slam into Sorsogon, Albay or Catanduanes provinces between Monday night and Tuesday morning, the weather bureau said. 

"Dapat alerto po tayo, bantayan po natin, tutok po tayo sa ating mga updates... Sana ay hindi muna tayo magre-relax," said PAGASA Administrator Vicente Malano. 

(We should be alert, watch out for updates. I hope we won't relax.) 

From Monday afternoon, "frequent to continuous heavy to intense rains" that can spawn landslides will lash Bicol Region, Northern Samar, Southern Quezon, and Marinduque, warned PAGASA.

The rest of Calabarzon, Romblon, Mindoro, and Samar, Eastern Samar should expect "occasional" heavy rains, while "intermittent" heavy rains" will hit Metro Manila, Central Luzon, eastern portions of Cagayan, and Isabela, and the rest of Eastern Visayas, it added. 


 
"Life-threatening" waves at least 3 meters high can hit coastal town in Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur and Catanduanes, said PAGASA. 

The weather agency also hoisted storm signal 3 over areas that would be whipped by 121 to 170 kph winds, including Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, southern portion of Camarines Norte (Daet, San Vincente, San Lorenzon Ruiz, Basud, Mercedes), and Burias Islands. 

The following areas, which may be battered by 61-120 kph winds, were under Signal no. 2: 

  • Metro Manila
  • Bulacan
  • Bataan
  • Pampanga
  • eastern portion of Nueva Ecija
  • southern Aurora
  • Cavite
  • Batangas
  • Laguna
  • Rizal
  • Quezon including Polillo Islands
  • Oriental Mindoro
  • Occidental Mindoro
  • Marinduque
  • Romblon
  • rest of Camarines Norte
  • Masbate including Ticao Island

Of these areas, Metro Manila, Pampanga, Laguna, Cavite and Batangas are home to several venues of the 30th SEA Games.

Meanwhile, the following areas were placed under signal no. 1, which means these may be lashed by 30 to 60 kph winds in 36 hours.

Tisoy has prompted the cancellation of several flights and classes in some areas.
