DAVAO CITY – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Thursday cited 307 local government units for good governance, more than the 254 lauded last year.
“Anti-corruption and responsiveness to citizens cannot remain at the national and regional levels because it will encompass local governments,” DILG Secretary Ismael Sueno said at an event attended by President Rodrigo Duterte at the SMX Convention Center in Lanang.
While doing well with governance, however, Sueno also said that the DILG is encouraging local governments to focus on economic programs to drive growth.
"[We want to] engage the local executives to [pursue] economic activities, [especially] local government units [in] provinces outside Metro Manila, [such as in] Mindanao, Visayas and Northern Luzon," Sueno said.
They are eyeing projects involving small public-private partnerships, Sueno said, to “"bring capital to the provinces" and drive small businesses to flourish.
