ILOCOS NORTE - Unidentified gunmen fired at the house of a barangay chairman in Barangay Imelda, Banna town Monday night.
According to Enrique Lucas, he and his wife were about to sleep when they heard the sound of successive gunshots hitting their house.
None of them saw the gunmen, who immediately fled after the incident.
Recovered at the scene were six fired cartridges and eight deformed bullets that hit the porch and wall of the house.
According to Lucas, he received a phone call last November 21, with the caller introducing himself as "Commander Lawin."
"Commander Lawin" allegedly told him that someone paid P10,000 for his murder, but promised not to kill him if he will also pay P10,000.
“Nagpakilala siya na Commander Lawin at hawak daw niya ang buong probinsya. Sinabi ko sa kanya na wala akong perang ganun. Tapos sagot naman niya na kahit ilan na lang pero sinabi ko ulit na wala talaga akong pera. Dun na naputol ang aming usapan," he said.
Police consider extortion as one of the possible motives behind the incident.
Senior Inspector Ferdinand Sierra believes that the suspects not only wanted to scare the chairman but to kill him, based on the number of bullets fired.
“Kung tatakutin lang, sana isa o dalawa. Higit na ‘yun eh. Hindi na biro yun," Sierra said.
Banna police have intensified security in the area.
