MANILA - The local government of Initao town in Misamis Oriental on Thursday mourned the death of a police officer in a grenade blast as he attempted to arrest a man terrorizing a school.
Police Master Sgt. Jason Magno reportedly attempted to arrest Ibrahim Bashier, who had a grenade, when the explosive device fell from the suspect's hands, leading to an explosion.
Both died while 17 others were wounded in the incident.
The local government (LGU) of Initao expressed their condolences to Magno's family.
"We lost a hero today. May his soul rest in peace," they said in a Facebook post.
The LGU also canceled its annual Lantawanan Festival due to the incident.
Investigation on the incident is still ongoing, as of this posting.
