MANILA - A retired police official has been appointed as the new director-general of the Bureau of Corrections.
Retired police senior superintendent Atty. Benjamin delos Santos replaced retired police Chief Superintendent Rolando Asuncion, who was the officer-in-charge of Bucor since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed presidency.
In his acceptance speech, Delos Santos expressed his gratitude to Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre for the recommendation.
He also thanked Duterte for appointing him to the "sensitive position amidst controversies surrounding drugs, criminality and corruption."
Delos Santos said he will work to reform the Bucor, which he said did not receive enough support from previous administrations.
"With my dream of a correctional academy that will train and educate
professional prison guards and reformation specialists on upgraded
salary standards, I will definitely work to be an instrument of
transition to a modern correctional system free from a contagious
environment for corruption and criminal activities," he said.
