Thousands of displaced villagers from Butig, Lanao del Sur received relief goods as fighting between military forces and the Maute terrorist group enters its third day.

As of Sunday, a total of 1,995 families are affected and evacuated to Lumabayanague and Bayabao towns, Barangays Sandab, Pindulonan, Malunguna and Raya Timbab in Butig.

The evacuees were given cans of sardines, noodles, coffee and sugar to help them get by while they are away from home and disrupted from work.

Governor Soraya Alonto Adiong has ordered the Lanao del Sur Social Welfare Office to resume packing of relief goods today and distribute the provisions again tomorrow.

Jenny Alonto Tamano, the provincial Public Information Officer, said the number of affected families may increase as the Social Welfare Office continues to validate evacuees in Marawi City today.

The Maute group is one of several armed Islamist groups in Mindanao that pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.

The group occupied several establishments in Butig last Saturday and have even raised a black ISIS flag in the area.
