MANILA - A Bureau of Corrections officer was gunned down in front of Poblacion Market, just a few meters away from the National Bilibid Prisons compound on Wednesday morning.
Correctional Officer 1 Porferio Bergula was shot 4 times by 2 unidentified assailants on board a motorcycle, according to BuCor spokesperson Major Albert Tapiru.
Initial reports showed Bergula went to a remittance center to send money to his family in Leyte. He then walked to an eatery where he was shot.
Bergula entered the BuCor this year and was assigned at the medium-security compound.
In September, senators raised concern over the killings of BuCor personnel in the past decade as it looked into alleged corruption at the bureau.
Three BuCor officials were killed by motorcycle-riding assailants since September 2018, police said.
