MANILA- The Philippine National Police has deployed Special Action Force (SAF) troops to areas in Bicol and Samar following President Rodrigo Duterte's order to suppress lawless violence.
PNP Chief, Director General Oscar Albayalde said Monday SAF troops are also on standby in the Negros area should forces need to be realigned in Mindanao.
"I gave directive to the director of SAF na mag deploy kaagad ng tig-isang company dito sa sinabing Bicol region and Samar area," he told reporters.
The move comes after the President signed Memorandum Order No. 32 calling for the deployment of additional police and military forces in Samar, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, and the Bicol Region.
The memorandum cited a spate of violence in the said regions “which appear to have been committed by lawless groups.”
Duterte's order targets communist rebels, PNP spokesperson Senior Supt. Benigno Durana said Monday.
"These are early indications that if the state does not address the lawless violence and acts of terror committed by the CPP-NPA-NDF, it might spread in some other areas. So this is just a proactive measure based on the normal power of the state," he said.
