MANILA – A high-ranking police official on his way to retirement admitted on Friday that it is difficult to sweep the Philippines clean of illegal drugs, despite law enforcers' best efforts to do so.
“Hindi naming pokus kung maabot nga ba iyon (We are not focusing on getting a drug-free Philippines), but we are doing our very best. It is very hard,” said Police Director Benjamin Magalong, PNP Deputy Chief for Operations, during a visit to the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
Magalong is set to retire on December 15.
Earlier this year, the PNP began “Oplan Tokhang” in a bid to persuade drug users and dealers to give themselves up to authorities and undergo rehabilitation.
However, the government's anti-drug campaign has also come under fire for the rise in the number of alleged drug-related extrajudicial killings. - with reports from Mae Cornes, ABS-CBN News
