MANILA - The Sandiganbayan 6th Division has granted the travel request of Davao Del Norte 2nd District Rep. Antonio Floirendo for his trip to Istanbul, Turkey with House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Floirendo, who is facing a graft case for the allegedly anomalous land deal between his family’s Tagum Agricultural Development Corporation (TADECO) and the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), has requested that he be allowed to leave the country on November 27, 2018 to participate in the Asian Parliamentary Assembly's 2nd Executive Council and 11th Plenary.
He also told the anti-graft court that he is not a flight risk and that he will be back on December 3, 2018.
“As the honorable court would appreciate, the probability of accused fleeing our judicial process is practically nonexistent with his previous travels where he has repeatedly returned,” Floirendo’s lawyer Reynaldo Salutan said in the travel grant plea.
Floirendo also attached to the motion a copy of the invitation sent by APA Secretary General Mohammad Reza Majidi to Speaker Arroyo and the travel authority issued by the Office of the House Speaker.
Floirendo’s graft case stemmed from the TADECO-BuCor land deal probe initiated by his erstwhile political ally, former House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, who was ousted by Arroyo in July this year.
Alvarez accused Floirendo of benefiting from the lease of 5,000 hectares of government land to TADECO that was allegedly disadvantageous to the government.
