Police recovered the shotgun used by suspect Efram Soto

ILOCOS SUR – A 19-year-old second year college student of the University of Northern Philippines was shot dead in Barangay Bonifacio, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur on Monday night.

Ian Marco Quinto was playing basketball with some friends in their barangay plaza when the suspect, identified as Efmar Soto, suddenly shot him with a 12-gauge shotgun.

“Naglalaro kami, tapos bigla na lang sinabi ng suspek na ‘nakuha ka na Ian’ hindi naman namen namalayan na nandoon siya kasi naglalaro kami,” said one of the victim’s companions.

The victim was immediately brought to the hospital but died while undergoing treatment.

Authorities arrested Soto and recovered the firearm used. He declined to comment.

An old grudge is believed to be the motive behind the killing.

“Sometime in June or July parehong na-involved ang dalawa sa isang away.

The victim’s father is deeply saddened by the incident. He said he will seek justice for his son.
