Ramon pummels northern Luzon; another storm, Sarah, looms

MANILA—Typhoon Ramon weakened into a severe tropical storm after making landfall over Cagayan early Tuesday, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

The tropical cyclone is now packing maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour (kph), with gusts of up to 165 kph.

Moving southwest at a speed of 10 kph, Ramon was last seen at the vicinity of Baggao, Cagayan as of 4 a.m., the agency said.

Tropical cyclone wind signals were raised over the following areas:

  • Signal number 2, where wind speeds of 61 to 120 kph may be experienced within 24 hours.
    - Abra
    - Apayao
    - Batanes
    - Cagayan, including Babuyan Islands
    - Ilocos Norte
    - Ilocos Sur
    - Kalinga
  • Signal number 1, where wind speeds of 30 to 60 kph may be experienced within 36 hours.
    - Benguet
    - Ifugao
    - Northern portion of Isabela (Sta. Maria, San Pablo, Maconacon, Cabagan, Sto. Tomas, Quezon, Delfin Albano, Tumauini, Divilacan, Quirino, Roxas, Mallig, San Manuel, Burgos, Gamu and Ilagan City)
    - La Union
    - Mountain Province
    - Pangasinan

PAGASA said coastal areas of northern Luzon may be flooded by seawater. The agency also warned residents living in areas susceptible to flooding and landslides.

Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Apayao and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte may experienced light to moderate with occasional to frequent heavy rains on Wednesday.

Ilocos Sur, Abra, Kalinga, Mt. Province, Ifugao, the northern portion of Isabela and the rest of Ilocos Norte may get light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains.

Meanwhile, PAGASA is also monitoring Tropical Depression Sarah last spotted at 750 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon.

The tropical cyclone is packing 55 kph winds and 70 kph gusts.

Sarah is forecast to take Ramon's track and hit northern Luzon, weather specialist Loriedin De La Cruz said.

Signal number 1 was raised over the eastern portion of Cagayan (Aparri, Baggao, Alcala, Gattaran, Lal-lo, Tuguegarao City, Penablanca, Iguig, Amulung, Santa Teresita, Camalaniugan, Santa Ana, Gonzaga, Buguey, Ballesteros and Calayan) and the northeastern portion of Isabela (Divilacan, Tumauini, Cabagan, Maconacon and San Pablo.)

Sarah is also expected to intensify into a tropical storm within 12 hours, PAGASA said.

Classes in several provinces were suspended on Wednesday, Nov. 20 due to the effects of the 2 weather disturbances.
