MANILA - Former president Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday questioned President Rodrigo Duterte's appointment of Vice President Leni Robredo to co-chair government's anti-narcotics drive if he does not trust her.

Aquino said there are 3 criteria of a chief executive in appointing a person to a government position: the appointee can get the job done, the President trusts the appointee to do his job and to do it well.

"Kung wala lahat 'yun, ba't mo itatalaga? Pwede ba 'yung itatalaga mo pero hindi mo pagkakatiwalaan? Medyo magulo yata," he told reporters.

(If all of these were not fulfilled, why would you appoint them? Is it possible to appoint someone but you do not trust them? That seems confusing.)

Duterte earlier said he has reservations on sharing classified state matters with Robredo and decided not to give her a Cabinet post after she sought advice from foreign institutions, such as the US government and United Nations, on the country's controversial drug war.

"Ang problema kasi dito, (The problem here is) I can't trust her, not only because she is with the opposition, I don't trust her because I don't know her," he said.

Robredo, however, said she would continue to fulfill her duties as co-chair of the inter-agency committee on anti-illegal drugs even without a Cabinet post.

"Hindi ko na problema kung 'di pa sila nagkakasundo sa role ko. Basta sa'kin, lahat na puwede kong gawin, gagawin ko," she said.

(It's not my problem if they haven't come to terms with my role. For me, I will do everything that I can.)

Robredo earlier accepted Duterte's appointment to co-chair the ICAD which was in response to her criticisms on the country's "failed" drug war.
