"He requested for a chest X-ray just as when we were about to be sent home from the ER of a hospital in the south. That's how we found out about the one peso coin in DJ's esophagus!" ani Panopio.

"Now perhaps that's why DJ was often putting almost his whole hand inside his mouth! I thought he only had itchy gums of some sort. He was all the while trying to extract that coin! He could not describe it accurately. He said 'sakit!' I would ask 'sakit ngipin mo?' and he would just nod — agreeing but he looked unsure," kuwento ng ina.

"And there were nights he would wake up irritated but would shout 'nanay tatay i'm sorry po!' 😢 So now we know why. For the longest time I was confident (and complacent) even when DJ was a even less than 1yo, he had very good gag reflex and he was really smart to always always give me anything that should not be swallowed (at 10mos he even managed to put aside in his mouth a tiny tiny piece of salmon tinik) and communicated discomfort to me). At least now, as a mother, I know better," dagdag pa niya.

"We're just grateful to the Lord that 1) the coin was in a position not blocking my son's airway for a week! 2) that he gave my doctor husband wisdom in asking for the x-ray; 3) for doctor friends, esp the ENT who performed the Esophagoscopy, Dr. Froilan Rafanan; and 4) the provisions to be able to get the best care for our son," ani Panopio.

"Attention: Parents of babies and toddlers! Persistent/intermittent vomiting with slight fever might mean your child may have swallowed something," aniya.
