MANILA - A lawmaker on Tuesday called on government to issue an order recalling all vaping or e-cigarette products in the country.

ACT-CIS Rep. Jocelyn Tulfo made the remark after the Philippines confirmed its first reported case of an illness related to vaping.

"Given the seriousness of the threat to public health that vaping poses especially to the youth, the prudent, yet forceful response is for the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to order the recall of all vaping products being sold in the country," she said.

"Vaping compounds and complicates these problems of people caught in the smoking habit or with already weak lungs, as well with cardiovascular ailments."

The Department of Health earlier called for an outright ban on vaping as it warned Filipinos that e-cigarettes are not a proven nicotine replacement therapy and can cause lung illness.

Bagong Henerasyon party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera has also filed a measure seeking to ban vaping in public places.

Around 1 million Filipinos use e-cigarettes, according to the DOH, which became popular as a supposed healthier alternative for those who want to quit smoking.
