MANILA—The Senate on Monday approved the P3.838-billion proposed spending plan of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for 2020.
The appropriation was P5.774 billion lower from the P9.8-billion budget that the poll body earlier sought.
This, after Congress approved a bill that would postpone the 2020 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to 2022.
The bill will allow incumbent elected barangay and SK officials to continue implementing various policies and complete programs affected by the budget delays early this year.
The elections were supposed to be held on May 11, 2020.
If the bill is enacted into law, there will be 2 elections in 2022: the presidential elections in May and the synchronized barangay and SK elections 7 months later.—With a report from Ina Reformina, ABS-CBN News
