ZAMBOANGA CITY—Funeral honors were given to 5 soldiers of the Philippine Army who were killed in a gun battle with members of the Abu Sayyaf Group last Friday in Patikul town, Sulu Province.
On Monday, their coffins were brought to the tarmac of Edwin Andrews Airbase here, while a band played before they boarded a C-130 plane.
During the ceremony, the chaplain blessed the coffins before they were carried off by soldiers to board the aircraft that will bring them to Cauayan city, Isabela.
From Cauayan, they will be picked up by their families.
Those who died were identified as corporals Renhart T. Macad, Bryan Q. Apalin, Jordan P. Labbutan, John Raphy P. Francisco, and Marlon P. Manuel.
Twenty-four others were wounded in the incident.
They were pursuing armed groups who continue to hold kidnap victims when the firefight occurred.
