LA CASTELLANA, Negros Occidental - The local government unit of this town suspended classes in primary and secondary level Friday after residents of barangays near Mt. Kanlaon reported sulfur fume coming from the volcano.
"We have suspended the classes temporarily. We will monitor the activity of Kanlaon before resuming classes," Mayor Rhumyla Nicor-Manguilimutan said.
Mari-Andylene Quintiano, resident volcanologist of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology in Negros Occidental said it was normal for the volcano to spew sulfur fumes.
"Normal lang po naman yun pero nagpadala na po kami ng personnel doon para matingnan ang kanilang inireport," Quintiano said.
Out of the 13 barangays of La Castellana town, 6 are situated right at the foot of the volcano.
"We have already alerted everyone to stay alert. We do not want to create panic but it pays to be prepared all the time," Manguilimutan said.
The mayor already called barangay leaders and different agencies to an emergency meeting to discuss preparations in case there will be a need to evacuate residents.
Mt. Kanlaon remains under alert level 2.
