MANILA - Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre said Wednesday he has offered the Philippine National Police (PNP) additional assistance for Kerwin Espinosa's protection.
Aguirre revealed in a press briefing at Malacañang on Wednesday that he has spoken with PNP Director General Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa about the National Bureau of Investigation's (NBI) intent to provide help.
"I have written General Bato that if ever any assistance is needed in connection with the protection, the protective custody of Kerwin, then the NBI is willing provide that protection," he said. NBI is an attached agency of the Department of Justice.
Aguirre noted, this is as the letter from Ambassador Constancio Vingno Jr., had said the young Espinosa wants to be put under the Department of Justice's Witness Protection Program (WPP).
Kerwin is the son of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa, who was killed while detained at the Baybay City Provincial Jail earlier this month.
"Kaya kinausap ko na rin si General Bato na in the event na dumating si Kerwin dito sa atin, kung pupuwede ay makapag-padala kami ng some prosecutors and agents of the NBI for us to help or to assist in the investigation of Kerwin," said Aguirre.
The younger Espinosa is expected to be repatriated from United Arab Emirates, where he was arrested after months of hiding.
