MANILA- The Philippine capital will build its first Muslim cemetery next year, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno" Domagoso said Friday.
Moreno made the announcement during his meeting with Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) Chairman Nur Misuari at City Hall.
The Manila mayor also showed the design of the cemetery to Misuari, which he said was just finished 2 weeks ago.
"I'm just happy to show it to you as a matter of respect to our Muslim brothers," Moreno told the Moro revolutionary leader.
The Manila mayor assured Misuari that construction of the cemetery would be finished by 2020.
Misuari called the plan "wonderful," saying it would create "big, big news in the Islamic world."
"I think with this we can reflect again on the days when Manila was ruled by Rajah Sulayman," Misuari said, referring to Manila's ruler before the Spanish colonization.
Moreno said the planned Muslim cemetery would have its own mosque where Muslims can prepare the remains of their dearly departed before the burial, as well as its own entry gate.
Construction of the cemetery will also be done under the guidance of an Imam, Moreno said.
