ILOCOS SUR – Unidentified robbers dug a tunnel and carted away P1.5 million in cash and jewelry from a pawnshop on Monday.
The robbers stole from the branch of HL Henry Lhuillier Pawnshop along Sta. Cruz.
Initial investigation disclosed that the owner of a pharmacy located beside the pawnshop noticed an acrid burning smell when he opened his store on Tuesday morning. When he entered, he saw his medicine shelves in disarray and behind it was a gaping hole going through the adjacent pawnshop.
When authorities opened the pawnshop, its glass door was covered and a large hole was found on the floor.
The robbers also left behind their acetylene tank and other equipment inside the pawnshop.
A covered drainage canal is believed to be the entry point of the suspects, who then tunneled a hole approximately 10 meters to enter the pawnshop.
Once inside, they used acetylene to destroy the vault.
The suspects carted away assorted jewelry amounting to P1,255,100, unclaimed jewelry (P128,700), and P150,850.67 in cash.
“Bukas kami noong Sabado, wala naman kaming napapansin na kakaiba pero sarado kami tuwing Linggo,” said Officer-In-Charge Ernalyn Javar.
Authorities are investigating if the case is connected to previous incidents in the province where two pawnshops were also robbed in the same manner.
“Mayroon kaming lead na sinusundan pero hindi pa natin pwedeng sabihin para hindi maapektuhan ang imbestigasyon,” said Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur chief-of-police Senior Inspector Mark Odilon Lagman.
The pawnshop management promised their clients that they will settle the jewelry stolen from the store.
The pawnshop has no CCTV camera and no assigned security guard during Sundays.
