MANILA - A Colombian man was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport upon arrival Sunday for concealing drugs in his body, authorities said Tuesday.
Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Aaron Aquino identified the suspect as Alberto Pedraza Quijano, 67, who arrived in the country via Emirates Airlines Flight EK332 from Dubai.
He was arrested 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 12.
The United States Embassy in Manila said in a statement Tuesday that the arrest was made after US Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Manila "shared information on a high-risk traveler aboard an incoming international flight with the Philippine Bureau of Customs and the PDEA."
Upon arrest, the suspect admitted in an interview with customs officials that he swallowed several pellets of roughly 1 kilo of cocaine worth around P8.89 million.
X-ray results showed circular items within the man's body, which turned out to be 79 condom-wrapped pellets, the embassy said.
Quijano will be facing charges for violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
