SARANGANI PROVINCE - Four centenarians from Sarangani Province received cash gifts worth P100,000 each from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

They were Kin Palawan, Andayen Ambat, Mina Tusan and Saon Lange Dait. They belonged to the Blaan tribe in Southern Mindanao.

Careen Joy Talino, granddaughter of Tusan, welcomed the financial assistance.

"Kasi matanda na siya, medyo marami na rin siyang sakit, kaya napakalaking tulong talaga nitong binigay na pera kay lola", Talino told ABS-CBN News.

Republic Act 10868 or known as "Centenarians Act of 2016" states that Filipinos who reach 100 years of age shall be honored with a letter of felicitation signed by the president and a P100,000 cash gift.

"Ito ay pasasamalat ng gobyerno sa kanilang kontribusyon sa ating bayan. Alam niyo, wala tayo dito kung wala sila, kaya dapat natin silang bigyang pugay", said Tita Compania of DSWD Region 12.

The local government unit of Alabel, Sarangani Province will also be giving a separate P100,000 cash incentive to the centenarians.

"May libre din silang gamot, check-up, at discount," said Mayor Vic Paul Salarda.

In the region, there are 426 centenarians who qualified for the cash gifts.
