ABRA - A barangay captain in San Juan, Abra was shot dead by unidentified assailants while he was buying spare parts at a store in Bangued, Abra, Thursday afternoon.
Barangay Silet Captain Romel Timbreza was shot dead by two motor-riding criminals, investigation showed.
Timbreza sustained gunshot wounds to his head and shoulder.
The victim's wife Emily Timbreza, who just arrived from Singapore and has been in the country for a week, said her husband knew of the threat in his life.
“Kasi po yung namatay po ‘yong SB (Sangguniang Barangay) member sa San Juan, nadakip po yung pumatay sa kanya tapos nagsalita po. Sabi po raw niya na isa po raw ang Timbreza na papatayin niya. Sabi ng asawa ko, 'ako yun ma,' sabi niya sa akin. Kaya magiingat ako kasi binabantaan nila ang buhay ko,” she said.
(Authorities were able to arrest the suspect in the killing of a Sangguniang Barangay member who died in San Juan. The suspect disclosed that a Timbreza was part of their target killings. My husband told me that it was him which is why I should take care because there is also a threat to my life.)
A special investigation task group was formed by the Police Provincial Office of Abra to investigate the case. A CCTV camera was installed in the area of the incident.
Police Senior Inspector Marcy Grace Marron said they are looking at politics as a possible motive for the crime.
Operatives recovered two cartridges of caliber 9mm.
