MANILA- "I think this is the time to do it."
This is how former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay described his 2019 Senate bid, his first foray into national politics.
He said it took him several months before deciding on his candidacy, and that he wants to address the "larger challenges" confronting the nation.
"Maybe it's time for me to go beyond the purely legal arena and confront what I consider to be larger challenges for Philippine society," he told ANC's "Beyond Politics."
Hilbay is running under the Aksyon Demokratiko political party and is also a candidate of the opposition coalition.
A known critic of President Rodrigo Duterte, Hilbay served as solicitor general during the presidency of Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.
Hilbay said he is banking on the public's search for "new voices" in the political scene for his Senate bid.
"I think the people are also looking for new voices, new faces, and I think this is the time to do it," he said.
If elected senator, Hilbay earlier said he would prioritize keeping an eye on the government's budget and on the performance of the country's officials.
